The Chief Operating Officer of Kazeem and Properties, Bashorun Ibrahim Babayeju, has praised the Association of Plumbers in Nigeria for transforming the perception of plumbing professionals and contributing significantly to safer building construction across the country.
Babayeju made this known during a major industry gathering attended by stakeholders in the construction sector, where the Minister of Health in Nigeria was visibly present among dignitaries and industry leaders.
Speaking passionately on the importance of plumbing in modern infrastructure, Babayeju described plumbers as indispensable professionals whose work sustains human life through access to water.
“Before now, people hardly regarded plumbing works as serious professions,” he said. “But today, the Association of Plumbers in Nigeria has succeeded in bringing practitioners together under one umbrella and giving the profession the recognition it deserves.”
According to him, no building project can be considered complete without proper water systems.
“There is no way you can build a house without water. Everything becomes incomplete when there is no water supply. If human beings could survive without water, perhaps plumbers would not be relevant. But because water is life, we must continue to appreciate and support these professionals because they bring life to our homes and society,” he stated.
Babayeju urged Nigerians and stakeholders in the construction industry to rally behind the association, stressing that the organisation has become a pillar within Nigeria’s building and construction ecosystem.
Addressing questions on whether Nigerian plumbers can compete globally with their counterparts abroad, the Kazeem Wire and Properties executive expressed confidence in the growing professionalism within the sector.
“Like I said earlier, this profession was once looked down upon. But now that they are organised under a strong association, there will be continuous development and re-development through training and collaboration. I believe Nigerian plumbers can compete with professionals anywhere in the world,” he added.
Speaking further on the issue of building collapse in Nigeria, Babsyeju explained that many structural failures are often linked to hidden plumbing defects rather than poor construction materials alone.
“In the course of our work over the years, we discovered that many building collapses happen because of fundamental defects. In some cases, good construction materials were used, but broken pipes hidden inside concrete walls and structures gradually weaken the building over time,” he explained.
He warned that unnoticed water leakage within walls and foundations can silently damage structures until they eventually collapse.
“You cannot leave water leaking inside walls and expect the building to remain strong forever. The structure keeps getting weaker every day until disaster happens,” he noted.
Babayeju called for stronger collaboration between regulatory agencies and professional plumbing bodies to prevent future tragedies. He specifically commended the efforts of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA), while advocating for mandatory plumbing inspection and proof-testing during construction projects.
“Every responsible construction company must involve certified plumbing professionals. Before any building is approved, the Association of Plumbers should inspect the installations, carry out proof testing and certify that there are no leakages. This alone can save many buildings in Nigeria,” he said.
