Orile Agege Marries Culture with Innovation: Chairman Akiola Idowu Launches Solar-Powered Empowerment Drive

Orile Agege witnessed a vibrant blend of tradition and technology as the community celebrated a full year of transformation under the leadership of Honourable Akiola Abiodun Idowu, Executive Chairman of Orile Agege Local Government.

 

The event, tagged “Orile Agege Cultural Exquisition”, was not just a festival of culture — it became a symbol of innovation and empowerment. The celebration featured a unique collaboration between Orile Agege and a team of Chinese expatriates, who were invited to train young, ambitious residents in the assembly of solar-powered electric tricycles (Maruwa) and other energy-efficient technologies. Also at the event were the traditional rulers, the Baales and the traditional worshippers who came to witness the new innovation at Orile- Agege.

Convener of the program, Mr. Emmanuel Alagbe, explained that the initiative aims to position Orile Agege as a local hub for renewable energy and green technology.

“We are bringing in a new generation of innovation powered by the sun. Imagine charging your tricycle or motorbike the same way you charge your phone at home — that’s the kind of future we’re building,” Alagbe said.

He added that the project would begin with a first batch of 25 to 50 selected trainees who will receive hands-on experience in assembling electric vehicles and solar-based home appliances that consume 40% less power. The trained participants will in turn train others, creating a chain of knowledge and empowerment within the local government.“ Our selection is not based on university degrees but on passion, curiosity, and the willingness to learn. We want young people who are eager to work and make a difference,” Alagbe emphasized.

Commending Hon. Akiola Idowu for his foresight, Alagbe described the Chairman as “the light that illuminates Orile Agege,” acknowledging his consistent support and dedication to youth empowerment and sustainable development.

“Even when we visited Lagos State University, the Vice-Chancellor expressed excitement that this kind of innovation is emerging from Orile Agege. This is leadership that thinks beyond today,” he noted.

 

The initiative has received commendations from community stakeholders and the Lagos State Government, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, for aligning with the state’s drive toward youth empowerment, local production, and clean energy adoption.

The Orile Agege Cultural Exquisition thus stands not only as a celebration of cultural pride but also as a forward-looking statement — proving that when culture meets innovation, communities move toward a more sustainable and prosperous future.
